RSI – Repetitive Strain Injury

RSI – Repetitive Strain Injury

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) occurs when a part of the body is used repetitively for tasks, typically it affects the arms and the hands most frequently. The repetitive nature of actions affects the soft tissues such as the ligaments, muscles and tendons of an area. It’s most often related to occupation for example using a computer, but can also occur due to hobbies for example racquet sports. The pain and symptoms often carry on long after the aggravating activity has stopped.  It is more commonly known as an overuse injury.

Symptoms can include:

  • Pain
  • Tightness
  • Dull Ache
  • Throbbing
  • Numbness
  • Tingling

Symptoms tend to develop gradually.

You might also hear RSI referred to as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis and Tenosynovitis.

Treatment includes trying to reduce the aggravating activity, or try to change the task or working environment, Anti-inflammatory medicines, Physiotherapy input, relaxation or a steroid injection.

Connected Physio is able to help with RSI, we aim to review aggravating factors to ensure correct posture, strengthen and stretch appropriate muscles, use manual techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy and deep transverse frictions if required and relaxation techniques.
